I am currently retracing Amelia Earhart's flight around the world using the flight simulator XPlane 11 and a Beech 18 from Shade Tree Micro Aviation. I plan to land tonight in Lae, but at the new Nadzab airport. I googled this location, but could not find the airport. I did see what looked like remnants of an airport and it matched the descriptions Amelia wrote about from her log notes and books she wrote posthumously called Last Flight. This has satisfied my curiosity and just in time as I make this landing and know that I can at least fly over this site as I head off towards Howland Island next.
Our blessings to you.Kitt & Cindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17654758057416942516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28244882.post-7636822846800178772019-06-24T21:00:44.546+10:002019-06-24T21:00:44.546+10:00Thankyou for researching and writing part of our h...Thankyou for researching and writing part of our history.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10417245557597797776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28244882.post-56040455191154513882017-08-22T13:26:58.846+10:002017-08-22T13:26:58.846+10:00I very much enjoyed reading about the early histor...I very much enjoyed reading about the early history of Lae. I remember traveling to Lae as a kid to get supplies, and seeing the airport still in use. I was probably 10 or 12 years old when Nadzab took over, and I remember thinking, "what a waste of a perfectly good airport. What are they going to do with it now?"Johnny G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02062927405201014087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28244882.post-71854781090152928572017-08-08T12:37:23.655+10:002017-08-08T12:37:23.655+10:00The first airfield was at Salamaua, predating Lae ...The first airfield was at Salamaua, predating Lae by some 4 years. It was used by the Japanese, but did not reopened after WW2. When Lae opened in 1927 the Lae tribe were "relocated" by the airlines, to the Round Water. As some compensation many men were given jobs at the airlines.

Nadzab was built by the Australian Army in 1943. It was a difficult job since the old river bed was quite deep with large rocks. The runway was steel matting. The runway was upgraded to tarmac and concrete in 1955, but was not used for 20 years. The wooden bridge across the Markham River was built by the same CommWorks crew.1960s Lae Residenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13751028779191875769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28244882.post-87608989281825689172013-12-03T16:27:45.121+10:002013-12-03T16:27:45.121+10:00Wow! great blogs. Interesting to see and read about Lae, how it used to be before. Nice blog. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04840677069689191953noreply@blogger.com
