Broker's jail term confirmed in Taiwan diplomatic case
The Supreme Court has confirmed a prison sentence of two years and four months for the Singapore broker involved in a scandal involving diplomatic relations with Papua New Guinea, Taiwan News reports.
Meanwhile, in Papua New Guinea, those prominent individuals involved in the scam, including a government minister, a senior politician, and a well-known lawyer continue to remain scot-free.
The court rejected an appeal against the same sentence by the High Court for forgery by Wu Shih-tsai, a man who promised the previous administration of President Chen Shui-bian that he could persuade Papua New Guinea to establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
The forgery charges against Wu relate to his altering of bank account statements on his computer, while the defamation charges stem from his claims that he had been threatened at gunpoint.
