A NURSING officer and mother-of-five was gang-raped at the tribal war zone between Tipini and Kairik near Porgera in Enga, The National reports.
Reports said the woman was travelling back from Wabag when she was dragged out of a PMV bus on Tuesday afternoon and raped.
She was released by her captors on Wednesday morning.
The Porgera community responded by marching to the police station and told the officers and authorities to immediately address the crime situation in the area.
Nixon Pakea, the coordinator of the Tipini-Kairik volunteer law and order committee, said since last month’s tribal war where 26 people were killed, there had been no other major incidents until the woman’s ordeal on Tuesday.
“This has angered the entire Porgera community. We are concerned about the lack of intervention by the Porgera Development Authority (PDA) and other relevant bodies,” Pakea said.
He said when the community fronted up at the police station, the people were told to seek explanations from the PDA.
However, no authority officials were available to address them.
Provincial police commander Supt Martin Lakari had not been briefed about the incident.
But, it is believed that the bus driver, his crew and a female companion had been arrested over the incident and were in police custody
